Pride

Finally finished watching "Pride" by Kimura Takuya. And after finishing it, found that the title is misleading. Cos, most of the time, the story's emphasis is on the relationship between Halu and Aki instead of the hardship of ice-hockey.

However, the ending is quite touching, but a bit too predictable.

And it's hard to believe Kimura is already 31 years old. Even more of a shock is Michelle Reis is already 34.

Today's story is about the origin of a word frequently used by residents of Bukit Beruang: "ham" (not the ham as in the one u eat wif roti, it's different).

It started when Chris Dai Lo, aka Chris Gerrard, came to Bukit Beruang after he graduated to visit his ex-landlords as well as ex-housemates n frens. I went to find him in Esmond's house.

Then, Warcraft 3 is the hottest game around. (no Frozen Throne yet). And back then, our skill level is consider low, where we just play 2 humans vs 2 computers. (cos we only got two computers, esmond's n siang yee's)

So, Chris was playing along with Esmond that day, and he's using Undead (a Warcraft 3 choosable race)..

Chris Dai Lo (Chris): Hehehe...
Wayne Yoongney (WYong): *standing behind Chris watching him play* *Siang Yee is also there*

Chris: See, the computer's hero is coming. Hehehe.  *Chris has a lot towers attacking the hero, and the hero is almost dead*

Siang Yee: OooooooOOOOooooo.. don let him run away! Faster, let him ham!!!!!

Chris: Yeah!! Let him HAM!

Esmond: *in the other room* OK! LET HIM HAM!!!

Siang Yee: JIAO TA!! LANG TA HAM!!! (screw him!! let him ham!!!)

Chris, Esmond, Siang Yee and WYong: Ham, Ham, Ham!!!!!!

From that moment onwards, the word "ham" is thus born. I still don't know what dialect is the word from. However, I do know how to use it.

Examples:
"Ham liao la, I forgot to bring my book." (i.e. die liao la)
"Let him ham!" (kill him, in a game only, not the actual physical killing)

Sometimes, a stronger verse is required for more serious cases. This is where the phrase "ham zhong ham" (zhong = middle in chinese. the red word used in mahjong with a square and a vertical line) comes in.

Examples:
"Ham zhong ham! I forgot to buy birthday present for ________!" (fill in the blank with the person you hate most)
"Ah Han si beh ham zhong ham! Never pass ball one!" (Ah Han very ham zhong ham!)

But then, all of the above cannot compare their graveness with "hammest". This is a word coined by GG Lim. I don know how to use this word, but it's DEFINED to be the most serious version of the word "ham". (hey, everyday you heard something new tat you don't know how it came about, like e=mc2, and when you ask someone about it, they will just tell u because they DEFINED it to be like that. So, it's the same thing here :P )

So, from now on, when u hear the word "ham", don just think of the pig's meat, think of the dying of the pig instead. Cos "ham" = die.
